About me

Paul grew up in Ottawa, in the city’s east end, where he attended Gloucester High School.  After high school, he enrolled in and was accepted to the Bachelor of Law program at Carleton University. An avid skier and snowboarder, while attending Carleton University, Paul also worked in the ski and snowboard industry as a sales representative.

After graduating from Carleton with top honours, Paul took a year off school to clerk with the firm of Smart & Biggar LLP, a patent and trademark law firm in Ottawa.  During this year, he applied to and was accepted by Queens, Western and Ottawa University law schools.  The decision was easy and Paul spent the next three years studying law at the University of Ottawa.  While at the U of O, he was active as a student leader, sitting with both the law school student government and the Student Federation for the university.

In 2003 he received his L.L.B. and went on to article in Ottawa with the national law firm of Lang Michener LLP, where he focused on commercial litigation and family law.

In the spring of 2004, Paul was called to the Ontario bar and chose to remain with Lang Michener LLP, in their litigation department, as a family law associate.

In the fall of 2006, after three years with Lang Michener, Paul accepted an offer to move his practice to Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG), Canada’s largest law firm, to work with their family law litigation practice group.

After a successful year with BLG, in November of 2007, Paul founded the law firm “Fitzgerald Family law.”  In doing so, he brought with him the work ethic and standard of excellence that he developed in the big firms, and applied to that the personal approach that is more common with a smaller practice.  The result is that he is able to provide his clients with high quality legal representation, flexibility and personalized service, without the bureaucracy of the larger firms.

Paul is experienced in all areas of family law; from domestic contracts for those entering into a relationship, to settlement agreements for those terminating one.  Whether the breakdown of a relationship is amicable, with the parties able to agree on the terms of a separation agreement, or thick with acrimony, necessitating a court application and litigation, Paul has the experience and commitment to see his clients through the difficult time and to ensure that their rights are properly protected.

Outside of the office, Paul enjoys snowboarding, running, and is the co-founder of an annual volleyball and ultimate fundraiser for the kids at CHEO.  He has also travelled extensively, throughout Canada and abroad, having lived for a year in Australia.
